When does an OPR change reach Malaysian borrowers? (2026)
Bank Negara last changed the OPR in July 2025, a cut to 2.75%. On published lag estimates, its loan-rate effect has passed and its peak effect runs to mid-2027.
The Federal Reserve raised rates on 16 September 2026 and several Asian central banks have been raising too. Malaysia has not. The policy change still working its way through Malaysian loans is a cut from more than a year ago.

A calm reading shortly after a change does not mean the change did nothing. It means it has not arrived.
Why are other Asian central banks raising rates while Malaysia holds?
Mainly inflation. South Korea’s exports rose 78% in 1-20 September 2026 with chips up 259%, but core inflation reached 3.4%, so the Bank of Korea raised rates in July and August. Malaysia’s consumer prices rose 1.78% in the year to July 2026, and the ringgit strengthened against the dollar, which removes much of the imported-inflation pressure that pushes other central banks to act.
Which Malaysian debts does the OPR reach first?
Household loans. Malaysia is one of three markets on this site, with Taiwan and Thailand, where household debt is larger than central government debt.
| Series | Amount | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Household debt | RM 1,413.5 billion | Q4 2025 |
| Central government debt | RM 1,320.8 billion | Q4 2025 |
| M2 | RM 2,665.3 billion, +6.78% | June 2026 |
| Consumer prices | +1.78% | July 2026 |
Many Malaysian home loans float against banks’ reference rates, which move with the OPR, so a future change would show up in household repayments sooner than in government interest costs.

What are the limits of these figures?
The 5, 9 and 15 months are the Bank of Korea's estimates for South Korea, and six months to two years is the ECB's description for the euro area; neither is an estimate for Malaysia. The debt series are dated Q4 2025 and follow BIS definitions, so they should not be compared directly with other economies.
Questions & answers
When did Bank Negara last change the OPR?
In July 2025, when it cut the Overnight Policy Rate by 25 basis points to 2.75%. It held the rate at every Monetary Policy Committee meeting in 2026, most recently on 3 September.
Has the July 2025 OPR cut reached borrowers yet?
On the ECB's description of the lags, pass-through to loan rates took about six months to a year, roughly January to July 2026, and the peak effect falls in the second year, roughly July 2026 to July 2027. This is a reference range, not a Bank Negara estimate.
Does the Fed's September 2026 increase change Malaysian loan rates?
Not directly. The ringgit is not pegged and the OPR has not moved. A Fed increase reaches Malaysia through capital flows, the exchange rate and bond yields rather than through loan pricing.
